Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages. The knee is a complex joint that flexes, extends and twists slightly from side to side. The knee’s design makes it vulnerable to a variety of injuries.  Knee problems can start due to injuries, wear and tear, or underlying conditions, significantly impacting the mobility and quality of life.  At Worthing Osteopathic & Wellbeing Clinic, we’re dedicated to finding the cause of the pain and providing effective, individual treatment plans.

Knee osteoarthritis: Understanding Wear and Tear

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative condition that wears down the cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.  There are different stages of osteoarthritis from mild to severe.  Our treatment is based around relieving the symptoms associated with this condition.  By employing a range of hands-on techniques, such as gentle stretching, joint mobilisation, and muscle strengthening exercises, as well as advice on lifestyle adjustments, our team of osteopaths and sports therapists can help increase joint mobility, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain.  These treatments not only focus on the knee itself but also address surrounding structures to improve overall function and support the body’s natural healing process.

Meniscus Injuries

The menisci are the cartilage of the knee joint.  They act as shock absorbers for the knee by cushioning the knee bones and provide stability, but they can be injured through sports or daily activities.  Symptoms include pain, swelling, and limited movement.  Through a comprehensive evaluation of the knee and its mechanics our treatment strategies aim at providing targeted hands-on techniques.  Additionally, osteopaths may prescribe specific exercises tailored to strengthen the muscles supporting the knee, further stabilising the joint

Ligament Injuries

Injuries to the knee ligaments, such as the ACL, can cause instability, pain and swelling.  Our treatment is aimed at restoring function and reducing pain without the immediate need for invasive procedures.  Through a blend of manual therapy and osteopathic techniques we work to decrease inflammation, enhance blood flow, and promote tissue healing around the injured ligament.  Additionally, we focus on correcting biomechanical imbalances and strengthening the muscles around the knee, which helps to stabilise the joint and mitigate the risk of future injuries.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

This is basically a pain at the front of the knee, around the kneecap.  Imbalances within the muscles of the knee and thigh cause the kneecap to rub on the underlying bone.  Our tailored treatment approach addresses the root cause, relieving pain and improving knee mechanics through osteopathic manipulation, sports therapy techniques and targeted exercise.

Tendonitis

Inflammation of tendons around the knee, such as the patellar tendon, can lead to significant pain and functional limitations. This condition is often the result of repetitive strain or sudden increases in physical activity. At Worthing Osteopathic & Wellbeing Clinic, we address tendonitis with therapeutic exercises designed to stretch and strengthen the affected tendon and surrounding muscles. Manual therapy, including massage and mobilization, is also utilized to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote quicker healing. We may incorporate modalities such as ultrasound or laser therapy to further enhance recovery.

Chondromalacia Patellae

Also known as “runner’s knee,” this condition involves the softening and deterioration of the cartilage beneath the kneecap, leading to pain and swelling, especially when walking up and down stairs. The pain is typically felt in the front part of the knee and may be accompanied by a grinding sensation. Treatment focuses on alleviating the pressure on the kneecap through knee-strengthening exercises that target the quadriceps and hamstrings. Orthotic support and taping techniques may also be employed to improve kneecap alignment and function.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Common among runners, cyclists, and athletes, ITBS occurs when the iliotibial band—a thick band of tissue that runs from the hip down the outer part of the thigh to the knee—becomes tight and inflamed, rubbing against the outer knee and causing pain. Treatment includes stretching exercises to relieve tightness, strengthening exercises for the hip and thigh muscles, and manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue mobilization to reduce tension in the iliotibial band. We also advise on activity modification to prevent recurrence.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease

This condition is prevalent in adolescents undergoing growth spurts, where the patellar tendon at the knee pulls on the tibial tuberosity (a bony bump just below the knee). It causes pain and swelling below the knee and is more common in those active in sports that involve running, jumping, and swift changes in direction. Management includes activity modification to reduce strain on the knee, stretching and strengthening exercises focused on the thigh and calf muscles, and pain relief measures such as ice and soft tissue treatments to reduce inflammation.
