Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is one of the 8 B vitamins and occurs naturally in meat fish and eggs. But only small amounts are absorbed through our food.

B12 allows for the creation of haem which is essential for the production of functional red blood cells. It also ensures that we have enough red blood cells and is important in the production of something called myelin which is a coating around nerve cells and helps with nerve conduction.

So B12 improves our energy and helps our nervous system. It’s a water soluble vitamin which means excess is excreted as we pass urine.

People who lack an adequate level of B12 often experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite,
  • Constipation,
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms and legs
  • Difficulty maintaining balance
  • Shortness of breath.

Because of these is often linked to chronic fatigue.

Some of the other benefits to B12 are:- it is essential for healthy hair, nails and skin. It helps build strong bones and helps reduce the chance of heart disease, reduces the chance of asthma attacks and macular degeneration.

B12 levels are measured using a blood test. In the UK it’s considered that if your blood level is below 190 that you are deficient in B12. If your blood level is around 200-300 then you’re borderline.  Many other countries use a higher marker, such as Japan where they consider optimal levels to be 500 or above.

The people at risk of getting low levels of B12 are:

  • Vegans and vegetarians as it’s not in their diet
  • Over 60’s as they have reduced absorption within the gut
  • Anti acid medication or metformin
  • Chronic digestive disorders such as Crohn’s, celiac disease or IBS
  • Eating disorders or people who have had weight loss surgery
  • Drink alcohol or abuse nitrous oxide
  • People who are HIV positive

There are different types of synthetic vitamin B12. Not all our legal in the UK.  All our products are purchased through the vitamin B12 Academy and are fully traceable.  B12 is a prescription only medication and we only give it for general health and Wellness/wellbeing.  We only use hydroxocobalamin, which is currently the only licenced NHS approved form of injectable B12.  It’s supplied by a UK licence an registered pharmaceutical company and controlled by registered prescribers to verify its authenticity.
